Return of the Light Within

Backward flow is correct, yet it is often misunderstood.

The movement of essence is to rise and flow outward through the eyes into the world. In cultivation, this tendency is gently reversed. The light is allowed to return through the third eye, drawing inward between the eyes and descending across the front of the brain.

It falls quietly, like a hidden stream, passing below the throat and into the chest, continuing its descent until it reaches the dark ocean below. There it gathers in stillness, before rising again through the spine.

Thus the light that once projected outward is no longer dispersed. It is drawn inward and returned to its source.

This is the meaning of Bright Eyes. The light of the eyes is turned back, like a waterfall flowing within a mountain, descending to the depths where it pools and gives rise to life.

When the essence returns to the depths, it nourishes the water of the kidneys and restores the root. From this root, the movement of life begins again.

The will of the kidneys, Zhi, moves the water like a wheel.

The intention of the spleen, Yi, receives it as soil.

Within this soil the seed is planted and cultivated.

The heart, as Shen, is the crystal palace.

It brings clarity and order, illuminating what has been formed within.

When the heart is still, heaven opens.

Light descends from above, entering through the crown as a subtle radiance, and settles within the heart. Within the crystal palace, this light is revealed.

From the heart it shines outward, not as projection, but as presence.

Thus heaven above and earth below are joined within the human being.

The root holds the seed of heaven.

The heart reveals its light.

In this union, the inner and outer are no longer divided. What is given by heaven is cultivated within and expressed through life.

From the beginning, virtue is not learned, it is revealed through what is lived.

One sits and allows the original nature to reveal itself. Intention is set, and the heart gives the command. Only then does one move in the world.

This is the circulation of the sun and the moon.

The sun rises along the spine.

The moon descends along the front.

The sun warms and invigorates.

The moon cools and nourishes.

Above and below, rising and returning, form a single movement.

Honey from the sun.

Milk from the moon.

From their union, life is renewed.
